Stayed at the Savoy on a recent trip to London. Being based in Tokyo, I’m used to driving on the left just like the English. However, when I arrived by cab to the Savoy, I was in for a little surprise.
The cab switched to the right side of the road! He didn’t seem phased by it, but I sure was. What’s going on? I asked the bellman and he told me it was so that cars can maneuver around the water fountain….hmmm. I said if you can drive around it on the right side of the road, you surely could as well on the left. What?—that can’t be the reason. Doing a little research I found this gem. Mystery solved.
It was bitterly cold in London when I was there. Record-breaking cold, evidently. I walked across the Hungerford Bridge over the Thames and before I got to the otherside I nearly froze! I hurried back to the warm and cozy Savoy and had tea instead! Here are a few shots of the hotel and the dreary London weather.
